Lancaster Railway StationLancaster is a National Cycling Demonstration Town - its gentle coastal gradients make it ideal for cycling and its stunning local scenery and miles of beaches make it a perfect walking and riding centre too.
With two motorway connections, a mainline railway station and Manchester and Liverpool airports both within a 90-minute commuting distance by rail or car, Lancaster's easy to get to, and from here you can have the whole north west of England at your feet. Yet walk out of the station and within 10 minutes you can be in the countryside. Perfect!

If you are going to the Lake District by train, consider asking for a PlusBus ticket which allows you to use any buses from Windermere to Bowness (the lake), Ambleside and Grasmere - much cheaper than paying on the bus.
If you want to go on the lake itself, go for a Lakes Day Ranger ticket. It gets you on all the trains and buses between here and the Lakes, plus you can use the ferries on Windermere (the entitlement is the equivalent of the length of the lake - so you could go from one end to the other single, or half way and then return.) The ferries are expensive if you turn up by car and buy your ticket!

Bike Buddies
Ever thought about cycling to work but lack confidence? Scared off by the steely-thighed cyclocrats in the bike shops? Need a little support in getting started? If so, then the Bike Buddy Scheme could be right up your alley! It's a free service for local residents to help new and returning cyclists to get to grips with cycling by helping them to find a suitable route from their home to work.
Bike Buddies are all experienced cyclists with a local good knowledge and able to map out the most suitable route for any required journey, whether it be to work, the supermarket, health centre or community hall.
By completing a simple questionnaire asking a few basic questions about your cycling abilities, you will be matched with a buddy who will contact you by phone or by email to discuss your requirements and arrange a convenient time and date to meet up for a dummy run of the journey.
Buddies will also be on hand to give information on the local cycle network, to give tips on riding safely in traffic, varying environments and weather conditions and offer advice on equipment, accessories and basic bike maintenance.
If you are interested in joining the scheme, simply contact the Cycling Demonstration Town Team on 01524 582086, or in writing to: Bike Buddy, Lancaster City Council, Palatine Hall, Dalton Square, Lancaster, LA1 1PW. The application form and questionnaire is also available on their website: www.celebratingcycling.org.

Tel: 01524 65328.
Supplies very cheap / free (depending on your circumstances) recycled bikes to your specifications. They also supply bits such as carrier racks (handy for fixing a basket to), mudguards, locks, helmets etc.
They also do FREE repairs (you pay for any new parts needed) at their cycle surgery on the the first Saturday of every month, from 10am-1pm and give free tuition on basic repair and maintenance. Amazing.
Satori: I took my bike in for a repair - the woman there saw how I was sitting on it and suggested a number of things they could do to make it fit me better and more safely. When I came back for it they had spotted something else that could potentially have been quite dangerous and sorted it (one of the cables was positioned so that if it should snap it would lock my front wheel! So they fitted a little metal shield to keep it clear). Including the original repair the whole thing cost about £15. It's like a new bike. They are really something.

Satori (2006): I've used this for 5 years now. For a smaller fee than other breakdown services I'm covered for every vehicle I travel in, whether as driver or passenger! I've used the service many times. I need a truly reliable service as I frequently transport frail disabled/elderly people. This one has always taken very good care of me and my companions. Speedy roadside repairs, good advice, good recovery. I used to be in the AA. This is better.
