Morecambe Warblers presents “Half A Sixpence”

Morecambe Warblers

A “Flash Bang Wallop” of a Musical!

To celebrate our 120th year of entertaining local audiences, Morecambe Warblers are proud to present the much loved British musical Half a Sixpence which tells the story of how inheriting a fortune can confuse everything you thought you knew about life.

Based on H.G.Wells’ Kipps: The story of a Simple Soul, the musical Half a Sixpence tells the story of Arthur Kipps, an orphan, at the turn of the last century. When he was younger, Kipps cut a sixpence in half and, before they were parted, told his childhood friend Ann to look at it whenever she missed him.  Years later Kipps is an over-worked draper’s assistant, who along with his fellow apprentices, Sid, Pearce and Buggins dream of a better and more fulfilling world than working for Mr Shalford.

On his day off, Kipps is reunited with Ann and they rekindle their childhood friendship. Then everything changes. Kipps meets Chitterlow — an eccentric actor/playwright — and finds out that he has inherited a fortune. He leaves his job and is swept up into high society, but then starts to become confused by his new life. Ann watches him struggling with his new identity and is dismayed by how he is being changed by the beautiful and elegant Helen Walsingham and her family and friends.

It is obvious that both of these young women love Kipps but which one will he listen to and choose to spend the rest of his life with?  With the help of his friends and the realisation that love is more important than money and always has been, Kipps eventually makes a choice.

With a superb score featuring original, memorable songs including “Half A Sixpence” and “Money to Burn” and new songs including a beautiful ballad for Kipps called “What Should I Feel” this timeless musical is sure to be a “Flash, Bang, Wallop” hit for all the family!

The Warblers are very excited to have the talented production team of Sharon Bell (Director and Choreographer), and Angela Potter (Musical Director) for this exciting version of Half A Sixpence, which toured the UK in 2008. The story remains the same but the show has been reimagined with much more humour and pace.
