The society organises monthly meetings throughout the autumn, winter and spring seasons held at venues in the area. Quarterly newsletters are distributed to members. These include details of the meeting programme and a programme of outdoor activities organised in conjunction with the RSPB Local Group and the Lancashire Wildlife Trust.

The prevalence of wild birds and other wildlife is a key indicator of environmental sustainability. Surveys and census work are also organised by LDBWS as well as participation in initiatives promoted by national bodies particularly the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO). An Annual Report "The Birds of Lancaster & District" covering details of observations and activities from the previous calendar year is provided free for members in the autumn of each year.
