Work on restoring the Lancaster Canal at Tewitfield locks, near Carnforth, continues at a smart pace thanks to the Northern Reaches Restoration CIC, a group formed by local volunteer Colin Ogden, and substantially supported by the Canal & River Trust (C&RT).

The Northern Reaches Restoration CIC is a Community Interest Company, and Colin and his growing band of volunteers have cleared by-washes from locks 5 to 8, cleared and fenced many overgrown areas and started work repairing the canal lock masonry.

They are also keen to make new links with the other interested groups and bodies interested in helping in this challenging and exciting move to expand the canal towards the Lake district.

When asked about his success recruiting helpers, who have impressed everyone in doing so much in such a short time, Colin replied.

“People like to see something happening. Since the M6 cut the canal, a lot of excellent work has been done by many people, but work had stagnated recently and I think we should all work together to clear this first major hurdle, and open up another 5 miles of beautiful canal, which will increase the interest to continue towards Kendal”

Our congratulations to Colin's volunteers for achieving so much in such a short time. You can find out more about the group and canal restoration activities by visiting them on facebook at 'Owd Lanky Boaters Group' and also by visiting the Lancaster Canal Trust volunteering page.
