Councillor Karen Leytham has resigned as a member of Lancaster City Council, citing personal reasons.

Councillor Leytham was first elected as a Labour Councillor to represent the Skerton West ward at a by-election in December 2006 and was re-elected at subsequent city council elections. She took a particularly keen interest in housing and rent issues, in responsible use of empty properties an in affordable housing schemes. She also worked for people who had become homeless and championed Oak Tree House, the homeless hostel whose residents helped to host the Lancaster Community Great Get-Together last month.

The vacancy in the Skerton West ward will be filled by a by-election on a date to be announced in due course.

Anyone who is interested in standing for the vacancy should telephone the City Council's elections office on 01524 582905.
