Officers are continuing to search this morning for a driver involved in a collision in Ulverston yesterday afternoon (26 July). The collision occurred in the area of the A5087 at the junction of Park Road and Priory Road. The collision involved a black VW Polo and a male cyclist.

The male cyclist, a 24-year-old man from the Ulverston area, was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital via air ambulance. He remains in a critical condition this morning and his family remain with him, and they are being supported by specially trained officers.

Police were actively looking for the vehicle at the time of the collision following incidents committed in the Lancashire area. (see report below). The vehicle has since been located by police abandoned in the nearby area.

The male driver involved in the Lancashire incidents is described as 5ft 10 inches, with dark blonde hair, of stocky build, wearing jeans and a white-coloured t-shirt.
Supt Rob O’Connor said: “The driver involved in this collision is not believed to live locally, and we continue to make every effort today to trace him. We would urge him to contact the police immediately.

“We continue to ask that anyone who believes they know the whereabouts of this man contacts police immediately and does not make any attempt to approach him themselves.”

Cumbria Constabulary has contacted the IPCC to make them aware of the incident as there were a number of officers in the area at the time of the collision.

Police are appealing for witnesses following two incidents at service stations in Forton and Carnforth.

The first incident happened shortly before midday today (Wednesday, July 26) when a 60 year old woman was sitting in the passenger side of a Range Rover Evoque in the car park at Forton Services Northbound.

A man got into the car and made threats towards her. She managed to get out of the car and raise the alarm and the man left the vehicle before making off from the scene in a white transit van and heading north on to the motorway.

A second incident was reported shortly after 12.30pm today at Truck Haven Services in Carnforth. An elderly woman was driving her black Volkswagen Polo into the services and was followed by a white van. As she parked up, a man got into the passenger side and demanded that she get out of the car. The woman got out and the man drove off in her Polo.

The man was described as white, 5ft 10in tall, big build, with very short or no hair and was described as wearing a light coloured T-shirt.
