Halton Mill

Halton Mill, Mill Lane, Halton, Lancaster LA2 6ND

T. 07582 789406

Halton Mill is owned by the award winning Lancaster Cohousing, a new development of 41 Passivhaus eco homes next door to the Mill. Many of the residents, who are committed to sustainable and neighbourly living, work out of the Mill.

Halton Mill is a historical industrial building, built in the late 19th century. Until 2008 it housed Luneside Engineering. The building has been eco renovated including a new roof, new windows and insulation.  Heating is provided by a biomass boiler and solar thermal. There are solar PV panels on the roof of the Mill and the majority of our electricity is provided by Halton Lune Hydro, a  community based hydro scheme which has built a micro hydro turbine on a nearby weir. It started to produce electricity in December 2014 and the building is now running 100 per cent on renewable energy.

We have now been awarded a top A rating Energy Performance Certificate for the Mill, showing it is at the highest standard of energy efficiency. It is extremely rare for an old building to be awarded an A rating.

The internal refurbishment has been done using recycled and enviromentally friendly materials where possible.

The Lancaster Community Car Club is based at the cohousing development, which Mill tenants can join, and there are car club cars available on site.

One of the advantages of working in a community of people wanting to reduce their environmental impact, is that we can all do that more effectively and more easily. Between us we have a huge amount of expertise and experience that we can share, and we can encourage and enthuse one another.

Venue Hire

We have a variety of spaces available for hire on their own or in combination – perfect for meetings, networking sessions, classes, art and craft workshops, rehearsals, massage, therapy sessions, weddings, parties, films, conferences and courses.  We have B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North) hyperfast broadband throughout the mill: wifi is available in all our spaces and wired access can be made available for groups of up to 10.

We have a grant from Halton Lune Trust to support music at the Mill. So for music events we can be flexible on room hire costs. We can also cover the costs of poster design, print and distribution; and we can provide our stage and (very small) PA system.

We also have a flexible performance and rehearsal space, which is used by many performers for one off events. In 2016 we hosted MillFest, our first Music Festival, and we host regular arts and crafts fairs/open studios.  We have prepared a guide for marketing events at the Mill which you can find here.

We host Lunelab, a well equipped community maker and crafts space. It contains lathes, saws, work benches, tools, a kiln and potters wheel and clay, jewellery benches and much more. It is divided into a woodwork/ pottery makerspace and an arts and crafts teaching space, which is used for a variety of courses. Individuals can join Lunelab for just £10 a month, which gives 24/7 access and use of a locker.

Wellbeing activities and spaces at Halton Mill

We have three beautiful wellbeing spaces.

  • The River Room is a large, beautiful first floor retreat space looking out on the river
  • The seminar room is a ground floor room with wooden floor and underfloor heating
  • The Rainbow Room is a holistic health and beauty space which also works for small groups and courses.

We attract many teachers and healers to run wellbeing courses or sessions at the Mill.  These include yoga, tai chi, movement meditation, mindfulness, non violent communication, natural nutrition, plant essences, gong healing, dance and more.

Our café serves freshly made food during the week.  We are happy to discuss catering for your event, or we have a list of other approved caterers. We are fully licensed and can usually provide a bar for evening events.

We try to keep our prices affordable and flexible, and to help new enterprises. We are keen to encourage networking groups to meet at the Mill, and offer a special rate of £1 per person attending for the first few meetings. We offer a discount to Mill tenants and Lancaster Cohousing residents, and a discount for people paying for spaces in advance.  You can see our prices here.
