Review of Lancaster Art Society Exhibition

This is the annual exhibition of paintings by the Lancaster and District Art Society, hosted by the Lancaster City Museum.

Twenty-seven different artists are exhibiting a total of just under one hundred paintings. With such a large number of contributors there is no single theme to the collection. Topics range from:

  • Floral displays
  • Landscapes (both UK and European)
  • Wild life
  • Still life
  • Portraits
  • Fantasy
  • Abstract

whereas media used includes:

  • Oils
  • Acrylic
  • Watercolour
  • Ink
  • Pastel
  • Mixed media & collage.

This is a very colourful collection of works. The quality of the exhibits is excellent belying the amateur status of the majority of the contributors. Virtually all of the works are on sale, with prices from £25 upwards. Catalogues are available in the galleries.

In addition to the exhibition, there is a display showing work by Norman Shadwell who unfortunately died in January of this year. Normal had a lifelong interest in art and was a great driving force within the art society, particularly after the took early retirement as City Engineer of the Lancaster City Council.

The exhibition fills the two rooms on either side of the Museum entrance. Lancaster City Museum is open from 10:00 to 17:00 Tuesday to Sunday. Currently the venue is undergoing major building work with much of the exterior surrounded by scaffolding and draped with sheeting. However the museum is open as normal.
