The Lancaster Canal Trust‘s boat Waterwitch has begun a new season of free canal boat trips from Crooklands Bridge, which is about 5 miles south of Kendal off the A65 (see map).
The first boat trip of the season, with a full compliment of passengers, got underway at 11am on Easter Sunday morning in warm sunshine.
Journeying to the coal yard wharf they turned and headed north, passing baby moorhens that scattered into the reeds, hiding until Waterwitch cruised slowly by.

Meanwhile, other early canal users near Seven Milestone bridge, a little further down the canal, were about their business – a proud mum and dad duck, with 15 baby ducks that could have only just hatched. What a delightful sight! (It will certainly interest the hungry heron.)
The Lancaster canal offers a new and close-up view with such wonderful spring displays of wildlife. This wonderful world of nature is not to be missed and is a credit to the Lancaster Canal Trust’s work in maintaining the rich environmental legacy of this man-made feature.
Waterwitch sails from Crooklands Stables every Sunday and Bank Holliday until October. Trips leave roughly every 40 minutes from 11am to 4.pm (ish). You can find out more about the trips at
