A comic no-holds-barred subversion of a Greek tragedy will have audiences crying with laughter at The Dukes next month.
Following on from its acclaimed production of Moby Dick which played at the Lancaster theatre in 2009, Spymonkey return with Oedipussy, their eagerly-awaited collaboration with artists from the forefront of British theatre.
Oedipussy is Spymonkey’s second co-production with Royal & Derngate Northampton and is touring nationally.
Spymonkey’s physical comedy combines with playful storytelling in a tale of forbidden lust, accidental incest, violent murder and the ultimate dysfunctional family: a jealous father, a messed-up son, and one mother of a brilliant comedy.
Taking inspiration from Barbarella, Bond and Kraftwerk, Spymonkey turn their unique brand of theatrical invention to this greatest of tragic tales, bringing it to life in typically outrageous fashion with the help of an impressive set, costumes, lighting and original music.
Since forming in 1998, Spymonkey has toured its shows extensively, delighting audiences and critics around the world.
• Oedipussy, which includes scenes of nudity, is recommended for ages 14 and above and runs at The Dukes from 22-24th March. Tickets are priced £14(£12 concessions)/£12(£10 concessions). To book, ring The Dukes Box Office on 01524 598500 or visit www.dukes-lancaster.org.
