Bailrigg Garden Village Consultation Drop-In

Venue:
Lancaster House Hotel, Ellel, Lancaster LA1 4GJ
Organisers:
Lancaster City Council

In January 2017 the Bailrigg area of Lancaster was chosen by the Government as the proposed location of a new Garden Village.

Lancaster City Council has included the Garden Village as a proposal in its draft Local Plan, which decides what land should and should not be allocated for development.

The council's regeneration team is leading on work to shape the Garden Village and design a concept plan for how it should be laid out and structured. But we're basically looking at a plan to build 3,500 - 5,000 new homes on greenfield sites in South Lancaster, in a sprawl of super-estates that would create a housing desert between the Canal and M6 from Scotforth and Hala through to Lancaster University and parts of Galgate. (see image for map).

Drawing up the concept plan will involve looking at and gathering information on many issues including drainage, flood risk, providing for sustainable travel, habitats and wildlife.

Over the next month the City Council will holding a series of drop-in events to give people the opportunity to talk to them about a range of topics including (in no particular order):

  • The Vision
  • Healthy living
  • Housing density
  • Bus rapid transit
  • Making more of the canal
  • The university in the village
  • Cycle superhighway
  • Making Galgate a better place
  • Local issues
  • Walking and cycling
  • Managing run off and drainage
  • Habitats and wildlife
  • Community
  • Employment
  • Schools and facilities
  • Leisure and recreation
  • Making distinctive places
  • Roads & Traffic

While the housing appears to be targetted at the professional, southern flight and out-of-town commutor markets we hope that locally affordable decent housing will be in there too.

The Council has explained that 'while these events are not directly part of the work taking place to bring forward the Local Plan, they do supplement the Local Plan process'.

Comments on the Local Plan should be sent to policyplanning@lancaster.gov.uk
