Heritage Open Days 2017

Discover the extraordinary Grade 1 listed medieval church of St Peter's in Heysham Village and the amazing ruins of St Patrick's Chapel at Heysham Head. We are running a number of special guided tours in partnership with local historian Richard Martin from the Church for Heritage Open Days 2017. Places are free but places on each tour is limited so booking is required.

Running alongside the tours there is a free family-friendly drop-in event at St Peter’s Church Hall (upstairs) 10.30am–4.30pm where there will be a display of recent work MBP have undertaken with CITiZAN at Rectory Wood Gardens, a chance to have a go with the Heysham mobile application and to explore our dig detective boxes (always a hit with the kids). We are delighted that Paul Sherman from North West Heritage will also be joining us to showcase his personal collection of Viking artefacts. On display will be weapons (swords and axes), personal items (combs, jewellery and textiles), occupational tools (spades, fishing equipment, horse fittings) and trade (amber and jet, trade weights). Much of this material will be on show at The Atkinson in Southport in 2018 as part of a national touring exhibition run jointly by The British Museum and York Museums Trust titled, 'Viking: Rediscover The Legend', so this is your chance to see this collection up close before next year

Due to a pre-booked function at the Church the tours at 11am and 1pm will take in the outside architecture of St Peter's, its fascinating graveyard and St Patrick's Chapel. The later tours at 3pm and 5pm will include a tour of the interior of the church and a chance to see the Hogback stone. Participants on the 11am and 1pm tours will be welcome to visit the church after 3pm to view the interior of the church/Hogback stone.

Each tour will take around 45 minutes to 1 hour and will involve walking on a relatively flat circular route from the Church Hall up to St Patrick's Chapel (covering a distance of around 0.5 km). There are some steps/undulating areas along the route.

Many thanks to the Parish Church of St Peter's for assisting with the arrangements for this Heritage Open Day and providing access to the Church.
