One of Morecambe’s most popular summer festivals will be hitting a new high this year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of More Music in the resort.
The Catch the Wind Kite Festival, organised by More Music, will be extended to a full weekend from June 29-30 to mark 20 years since the community and education charity was founded.
Thousands of people are expected to flock to Morecambe Promenade and turn their eyes skywards to watch a vast array of kites of all shapes, sizes and colours create a spectacular display from noon to 5pm each day.
And there’ll be plenty to see and do on terra firma too. On the Saturday, there will be arts and crafts, a chance to learn circus skills in a circus tent, a bungee trampoline, street entertainers and the Baybeat band on the Stone Jetty and next to the Midland Hotel.
As an additional attraction on the Sunday, a stage outside The Platform will host a variety of musicians and bands creating a vibrant festival atmosphere – and it’s all for free!
Performers will include Lake Komo, Guns of Navarone, Baybeat Carnival Band, Bill Orrick and Leap to your Feet Appalachian Dancers.
The Catch the Wind Kite Festival makes the most of Morecambe’s seafront and its famous big bay view. It is one of a number of special events taking place this summer to celebrate More Music’s 20th anniversary in the resort. Others coming up include the West End Festival and Stages Reunion Gig on July 20 and the return of the One Man Band Shebang on 21st July.
Another celebratory event taking place during the kite festival is a gig by The New Rope String Band on 29th June at 8.00pm in The Hothouse, More Music’s base.
The New Rope String Band combine superb musicianship with comic genius in a unique show featuring elements of the circus, vaudeville and slapstick with acoustic music from various world traditions including Celtic, bluegrass, cajun, boogie-woogie, Dixieland and classical work.
• Tickets for the gig are priced £10/£8 (concession). For more information and to book, ring 01524 831997 or visit www.moremusic.org.uk
