The chief executive of a cancer charity is calling on people to join him and his partner for an epic 21-mile sponsored walk through the magnificent landscape between Coniston and Barrow on 12 May.

Neil Townsend, who has worked for CancerCare North Lancashire and South Cumbria for three years, said: “The Keswick (K2B) and Coniston to Barrow (C2B) walks are rather famous in these parts but for some reason my partner Alan Disley and I have never taken part, despite the fact that we’re keen walkers.
“We’ve had some fantastic donations from the Keswick to Barrow (K2B) Committee in recent years and this year I’d really like to put together a team of CancerCare staff, volunteers and supporters to complete the Coniston to Barrow Walk.”

Team CancerCare’s participation in this year’s walk will mark 35 years since CancerCare was founded in Lancaster by Professor Malcolm McIllmurray whose vision was to provide free, emotional support for families in the local community who had been affected by cancer.

The charity now helps more than 1,500 local people each year across North Lancashire and South Cumbria and the C2B Walk will see participants cross the finish line just streets away from CancerCare’s newly-launched cancer support centre at the Furness Centre in Trinity Church on Warwick Street in Barrow.

The team will be collecting sponsorship to tackle the C2B challenge with money they raise supporting CancerCare as well as other local causes.

Neil added:  “Any funds raised would help us to continue to provide much needed services to anyone in our community impacted by cancer.

“It would ensure that we can help everyone who turns to us for support. I’m really looking forward to the walk through the breath-taking scenery of our region and, come rain or shine, we’ll be raising funds and raising smiles!”
