Predictions for land projected to be below annual flood level in 2050 make for grim news for Lancaster and Morecambe residents, based on projections compiled by Climate Central, an independent group of scientists and communicators.
Huge swathes of the local area are now predicted to be vulnerable to potential flooding as climate change accelerates and sea levels rise, Lancaster and Morecambe just one of many areas in Britain that could potentially be impacted.
This does not mean, of course, that the areas highlighted by the Surging Seas data will flood – it just indicates a greater possibility.
If you’re concerned about more current flood risks to your property or business, the Environment Agency has a page here – Check the long term flood risk for an area in England – enabling you to see what they predict. There are links to services for Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, on the page, too.
Climate Central research and report the facts about our changing climate and how it affects people’s lives. A US based, policy-neutral 501(c)(3) nonprofit, they communicate climate change science, effects, and solutions to the public and decision-makers.
Climate Central’s Program on Sea Level Rise strives to provide accurate, clear and granular information about sea level rise and coastal flood hazards both locally and globally, today and tomorrow. Anchored in rigorous primary research, their work distinguishes itself by its user-friendly maps and tools, extensive datasets, and high-quality visual presentation.
The program dedicates its efforts to helping citizens, communities, businesses, organisations, and governments at every level to understand the consequences of different carbon pathways and to navigate the shifting waters of our warming world.
Climate Central uses science, big data, and technology to generate thousands of local storylines and compelling visuals that make climate change personal and show what can be done about it. The organisation address climate science, sea level rise, extreme weather, energy, and related topics.
