Morecambe’s leading businesses are joining forces to promote the resort in a special weekend which will feature a chance to buy a pair of Eric Morecambe’s glasses.

Organised by the Morecambe Visitor, the event kicks off with a black tie dinner at The Midland Hotel and on Saturday everyone will have a chance to buy a replica of Eric’s glasses and in turn support the resorts RNLI crew.

“There’s a lot to shout about in Morecambe,” says Mike Harper, managing director of Lancaster and Morecambe Newspapers. “Amid all the doom and gloom of recession, service cuts and closing attractions, people who live and work here still believe there is nowhere quite like our lovely resort.

“We have a bay view to die for, a gorgeous art deco hotel resplendent on the seafront, a football team to be proud of with a new stadium on the way, small thriving businesses willing to invest in our economy, some great places to eat, drink and stay, and a fabulous legacy of comedy led by our favourite son Eric Morecambe.”

Now in its second year, Morecambe Day, on 15th May, is a chance to celebrate Morecambe and its most famous son’s birthday.

Businesses including the Arndale Centre, The Midland Hotel, Heysham power stations, Steve Middlesbrough entertainment and Morecambe FC have been working for months to plan the dinner and the day.

After the sell-out awards dinner, when the resort’s finest will be recognised the attention will turn to Morecambe itself for events in the Arndale Centre, to find a ‘young Eric’ and at Eric’s statue when everyone can put their glasses on and sing ‘Bring me Sunshine.’

Mike added: “Every penny raised from the dinner and the sale of the glasses will be going to Morecambe RNLI crew who do so much for the resort.

“We are hoping for lots and lots of people to be at the statue at noon on Saturday to give a fitting rendition of Eric and Ernie classics, and then we want them to see what this great resort has to offer.”
