Lancaster City Council has launched a major new survey to help identify whether there is adequate provision in the district for wheeled sports including skating and BMX riding.
The city council currently runs two skate parks in the district with new proposals coming forward for a ‘pump track’ in Ryelands Park and a potential facility in Morecambe – but rather than looking at these two ideas in isolation, the council has launched a survey to look at provision across the district.
Aimed primarily at the age group 10+ the survey aims to find out what type of facilities young people want, where they want them and whether they want to use them for recreation or competition.
Councillor David Smith, cabinet member with responsibility for parks and open spaces, said: “Skating, BMX riding and scooting are very popular sports in the area. Although we have some facilities, we are regularly approached with ideas on how our existing facilities can be developed and also suggestions for where we can develop something new.
“It’s time that we took a look at the bigger picture and what provision there needs to be across the district. Rather than building small sites it may be that one big facility is needed, or it may be that three or four parks at strategic sites would be best.
“We can’t make any promises and there’s no guarantee money will be available, but the results of this survey will help to develop a long term vision which funders require when they’re considering projects.”
