Lancaster City Council is working in partnership with the Dogs Trust this year to help dog owners avoid breaking the law. In April 2016, the Government is introducing a law making it compulsory for all dogs to be micro chipped, meaning it will be an offence if they are not.
In readiness for the new legislation, Lancaster City Council in conjunction with the Dogs Trust, are continuing to arrange free micro chipping days to ensure as many dog owners as possible are able to comply with the new legislation
Micro chipping involves painlessly inserting a chip the size of a grain of rice under the dog’s skin which will identify the owner and address of the dog. The chip can be electronically read by dog wardens and other animal welfare organisations if it were ever to become lost.
The next free micro chipping session will take place at The Gregson Community & Arts Centre, 33 Moorgate, Lancaster, Lancashire, LA1 3PY on Wednesday 25th November 2015, between 10am and 12pm and 1pm and 3pm. The session will be open to everyone within the Lancaster City Council district.
Coun Karen Leytham, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental health, said: “We believe that making the micro chipping of dogs compulsory is an important step forward for dog welfare. It is hoped that the free local micro chipping sessions on offer this year ahead of the new legislation coming into force will not only help residents to avoid breaking the law but will also greatly assist our Dog Wardens in reuniting owners with their much loved pets and reduce the burden placed on local animal shelters when owners cannot be traced.”
