A new video about the history and impact of Lancaster’s smaller waterways has just been released on YouTube.

The talk starts with the (very) big picture about waterways, then focuses on Lancaster’s streams such as Bowerham Brook and Burrow Beck, revealing some of their rich history, such as “boundary riding”, and much more.

The Streams of Lancaster – Past Present and Future is the work of Professor Bronislaw Szerszynski, a local resident and head of the Department of Sociology at Lancaster University. He’s gathered lots of interesting information and stories about local streams through forums such as Lancaster Past and Present on Facebook, and the help of local historians and many others.

Last summer, he did a talk on the past, present and possible future of Lancaster’s streams, organised by the local Green Party but open to all, now available as a video here. Comments are welcomed.

Professor Bronislaw Szerszynski’s research at Lancaster University draws on the social sciences, humanities, arts and natural sciences to explore the changing relationship between humans, environment and technology. In recent years I have applied this interdisciplinary approach to various environment and technology issues, such as technological innovation (especially biotechnology)
