Enchanting performer and award-winning playwright Alison Neil tells the story of The Railway Children author Edith Nesbit in Larks and Magic, the latest of her entertaining one-woman shows about amazing women from history, coming to Arnside’s Educational Institute in December.

Quixotic, charming and maddening, Edith’s bohemian private life was jaw-dropping, even by modern standards. She knew everyone: George Bernard Shaw, H G Wells, E M Forster, Noel Coward; was a founding member of the Fabian Society; and wrote a staggering quantity of books, short stories and poetry.

Larks and Magic tells the story of her struggle to keep her strange family above water, without losing her zest for life or sense of humour, and provides a dazzling glimpse into a tempestuous, joyful, brilliant and extraordinary life.

“I was transported to another age and another time as you brought Nesbit alive for me,” enthused one audience member.

This event is brought to Arnside by the Highlights Rural Touring Scheme, which connects over 65 venues, an army of volunteer promoters and an ever-growing list of artists. Together, we bring great arts and unmissable culture to rural areas, lighting up village halls, schools and community centres with music, dance, theatre and storytelling.

Set up originally to work with isolated communities in the North Pennines, they now work across Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland. Across the three counties, many communities have suffered from long term economic decline, resulting in pockets of high unemployment, poor transport links, declining local services and social isolation.
