charge to help support those in need,” they explain. “Using our depot and the network, we will send boxed up items down to the hub to be palletised and distributed to those in need.”

Animal Care

Local charity Animal Care have started an appeal to help the animals in Ukraine and are asking all their supporters to donate what they can to help.

Donations can be made on a dedicated Justgiving page or they have collection tins in their charity shop on Market Street, Lancaster, and tea rooms.

In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24th February, international animal charity IFAW is preparing to send emergency aid to two local animal shelters in Ukraine that urgently need help.

These are Shelter Pif, a dog rescue centre located in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. Evacuation is not an option for shelter staff and the over 800 dogs in their care.

Destroyed by fire in 2016, IFAW came to the aid of Gorlovka Shelter, in Ukraine, by replacing medical supplies, food reserves, as well as building a fence to contain the dogs until the the shelter’s walls were rebuilt. © Gorlovka Shelter

The other is Holivka Shelter, located in Gorlovka in eastern Ukraine. Staff are not allowed to cook hot food for their dogs because the fire could draw unnecessary attention to the shelter. They desperately need to buy dry food for the 300 dogs in their care.

IFAW developed strong relationships with both of these shelters during the 2014 Russia-Ukraine conflict, and have remained in touch over the years as they slowly rebuilt their homes, shelters, and lives.

“Your gift today could help IFAW rush emergency aid to provide pet food, veterinary supplies,” say Animal Care, “and wages for daily care staff to both shelters in Ukraine, and help protect other animals around the world.”

Lancaster Royal Grammar School pupils 2300toKyiv fundraiser

A group of sixth formers at Lancaster Royal Grammar School have started a fundraiser for the civilians of Ukraine. 23 pupils are each going to run, swim, or row 100km, totalling to 2300km – the distance between Lancaster and Kyiv.

They have set up a GoFundMe to collect donations and a website to track progress.

“We aim to smash our target of £2300, one pound for every kilometre travelled,” says Tom Anderton. “Any donations or shares are greatly appreciated, and we would love for you to interact with us to help us reach our goal.”
