It’s a funny old business is the stand up comedy game. Look at Scott Bennett, for example. He’s spent years charming the crowds with his easy, accessible style and has drawn comparisons to both John Bishop and Jason Manford. A firm favourite with comedy club audiences for over a decade now, including frequent appearances at the Lancaster Comedy Club, Scott always has something new, and downright hilarious, to say.
Despite all this and several national tour support slots (including for Rob Brydon and the aforementioned Manford) Scott has never had that big break that separates the jobbing comic from the household name.
Then along came a national lockdown…
Not one to sit on his furlough and wait for things to improve Scott came up with Stand Up From The Shed, a weekly, topical, stand up show live streamed from his garden shed! Scott soon appeared on Sky News, BBC News, Five Live, was featured in the national press and Stand Up From The Shed itself went viral.
At the end of 2020, Scott was voted “Best Act” in the UK Comedy Awards, a prestigious prize, decided by comedians and promoters in the industry and, on the back of this, already has his first national TV appearance ‘in the can’ on BBC’s Live At The Apollo, to be screened later this year. Factor in his current TV advert for a well known building society (alongside said shed!) and it’s easy to see while we will be all hearing a lot more from Scott in the coming months.
