Motorists driving through parts of this area over the next few weeks are being warned to take extra care, as the travelling community makes it way to the annual Appleby Horse Fair.

In particular, drivers are being asked to be mindful of the traditional horse drawn wagons, known as a Vardo, which will be making their way through the county over the coming days and weeks.

Motorists are asked to pass slow and wide past these wagons.

The annual fair will take place between Thursday 9th June until Sunday 12th June. The migration period through the area usually starts ten days before and lasts for up to ten days after the fair dates.

Appleby Horse Fair’s 2022 date moved to avoid Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

June is also Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month with celebration, education and efforts to raise awareness of the histories and experiences of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people. This year the theme is ‘What Makes a Home?’
