Time is running out to make sure that you are registered to vote in time for the European elections on Thursday 22 May. In Lancaster there will also be City Council by-elections for two seats that have come vacant, in the University Ward and Scotforth West (see previous news: (‘Councillors quit, by elections announced‘). Morecambe Town Council will be holding a by-election in Westgate ward.
The deadline for applications to be included on the Register of Electors in time for these election is Tuesday May 6. Anyone registering after this time will not be able to vote in the elections for the European Parliament.
You cannot register to vote online, but you can download an electoral registration form from the Lancaster City Council website (don’t worry if it looks a bit out-of-date). The form must be returned to the Electoral Registration Officer at Lancaster Town Hall (see full address on form) by 6 May. If you would like to be sent a registration form by post, or are not sure whether you are registered to vote, call the elections helpline on 01524 582905.
You can’t vote if you’re not registered and you won’t be automatically registered by paying council tax. This is particularly important for anyone who has recently moved home – if they do not register at their new address they risk falling off the electoral register.
The deadline for registering for a postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday May 7. For an application form to vote by post email elections@lancaster.gov.uk giving your name and address, or telephone the elections helpline on 01524 582905, to have one posted out to you.
