Local arts organisation Graft Lancaster is running a series of talks and workshops under the title “The Artist’s Survival Guide” this month, for anyone interested in following a career as an artist.

The series of events, starting 12th March 2022, aims to help creators learn practical skills and strategies to help you navigate and thrive in the art world, and hear from a selection of early career artists about their work and experiences.

Workshop topics have been devised through collaboration with students from Blackpool College of Art and Lancaster University, and members of the Good Things Collective, Morecambe.

The Artist’s Survival Guide features eight artists and arts professionals delivering three sessions covering areas and issues suggested by students and artists.

Workshops are open to students, local artists and the general public. They’re all free, but booking is essential. For full details including booking links, check out this page on the Graft web site.

Graft Lancaster believe art is for everyone, and this is at the core of everything they do. The group has three aims in all of it activity, firstly to champion exciting contemporary art, creating opportunities and experiences for early career artists which will contribute to their future career development.

Graft also aims to open up participation in viewing, making and discussing contemporary art, presenting it as important and relevant to audiences outside the “art world”; and to promote Lancaster and the surrounding region as a place which supports diversity, inclusivity and creativity. We do this by supporting the existing community in the city, and involving artists from across the UK in our programme.

Graft is currently a siteless organisation, and all of their activity takes place in “pop-up” venues or public spaces. Although they have long-term plans to occupy a permanent gallery and studio complex, they believe that continuing to bring art outside traditional spaces is vital to presenting it as accessible and inclusive.
