Parvovirus – a contagious virus mainly affecting dogs – has reared its ugly head in our local area, with reports of cases in Lancaster and Morecambe.

Local vets warn dog owners of the disease on a regular basis, which causes diarrhea and dehydration in dogs and is again affecting animals in our area, and are urging them to take action, as are local businesses such as VIP Dog Grooming.

The highly contagious virus attacks the intestines, causing severe vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration in dogs.

VIP Dog Grooming advises dog owners to ensure vaccinations and immunity protection are up to date “to protect our canines as much as we can against this vile disease.

“If your dog is showing symptoms, act fast!” they advise. “Isolate your dog and seek immediate veterinary care.”

“Do not allow your dog to mix with other dogs, or attend any groom appointments, puppy or dog classes, if they are showing any symptoms.

“We need to project our Canine community.”

Parvovirus Advice (Dogs)

Parvovirus is very contagious and spreads in poo particles. Unvaccinated puppies, less than six months old, are particularly prone to parvovirus infections and often get the most severe signs.

Fortunately, we can protect our dogs from parvovirus by vaccinating them regularly throughout their life.
