Next Tuesday, 14th July 2026, Naomi Parsons will be leading “Getting Your Head Down: Lodging Houses of Lancaster”, a brand new walking tour around the city centre. But if you want to join it, be quick, there are only a handful of spaces remaining.

Old Lodging Houses of Lancaster

The tour, which will be repeated on 20th October, organised by Lancaster City Museum, starts at 11.00am from Henry Street, in the paved area outside the German Doner Kebab restaurant (Click here to see the location on Google Maps).

Running for about 90 minutes, dive into the violent, seedy and at times, tragic world of the common lodging house. Explore stories of immigration with the Irish Feehan and Gallagher families, the Italian Nardone and Ginocchio families and Stewart Traveller family, who all ran lodging houses.

You’ll also find out why only the brave would go seeking shelter in notorious China Lane and Henry Street as well as the heart rending life story of lodger and prostitute, Annie Gibson.
