The Friends of Freeman’s Wood are running a Daffodil Planting this Friday (14th August 2026), and are asking for help to bring some Spring colour to New Quay Road next year.
A local resident has kindly organised the purchase of 20 kg of daffodil bulbs, which the Friends will be planting in the grass verges around the new bus turning circle at the end of New Quay Road.
“We’re hoping to get as many local residents involved as possible to help create a colourful display that everyone can enjoy when the daffodils bloom next spring,” they say.
“It’s a great opportunity to get outside, meet neighbours and make a positive contribution to the local area.”
If you’re able to get along, you’re asked to please bring suitable dibbers, trowels and gardening gloves.
“Every pair of hands will be appreciated, whether you can stay for the whole session or just lend a hand for a short while.”
Freemans Wood is a public green space located off New Quay Road in the Marsh area of Lancaster. It was designated as a Town Green in 2020 after a long legal battle to protect it from development. The land was purchased by the Friends of Freeman’s Wood Charitable Incorporated Organisation in April 2023 with the generous support of the local population.
The Friends of Freeman’s Wood, a registered charity, completed the purchase of 27 acres of land in April 2023, which includes the Freeman’s Wood Town Green and a smaller rectangle of woodland between the Town Green and Coronation Field, off Willow Lane in Lancaster.
Their mission is to promote, for the benefit of the public, the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment of Coronation Field and Freeman’s Wood, Lancaster, including promoting biological diversity and encouraging community engagement with local green spaces.
