Lancaster Central Library will be closed for essential maintenance for several months, from August until at least April next year.
Lancashire County Council has finally announced that last day of opening to the public will be Tuesday 11th August 2026. After this the library will be closed for essential maintenance including the roof.
The works are expected to be completed by April 2027, but the job may take longer.
This is not the first time the library has closed: the last was for just one week, back in 2009, but this work will impact users for much longer.
Lancaster Central’s home library service will continue, and Morecambe, Bolton-le-Sands, Halton, Heysham, Carnforth and Silverdale libraries will remain open during this time. Morecambe library will also offer extended opening hours during the work.
Regular activities such as Baby Bounce & Rhyme sessions will be delivered from White Cross Business Park, South Road, Lancaster, LA1 4XQ.
There will also be a mobile library service provision from White Cross. Further details to be confirmed.
Residents who have loaned items from Lancaster Library do not need to return them before the closure date and can return these to any library in Lancashire.
The return date on items will be automatically extended until later in the year, and fines will be waived during the closure.
